Often times this is where you can see the “good” side of the app – for example a confession such as “I have a fear of commitment and don’t want to end up like my parents” received over 30 replies, many supportive, or giving advice or just a simple “me too”. Another Whisper feature is the ability to reply to a whisper, with another whisper. Replies – speaking of vulnerable teens (or vulnerable anyone). But how would I have reacted if I was a vulnerable teen? I replied that no, I was just checking things out and that was that. Someone reaching out asking if I needed advice. I posted a whisper just to see what it would be like (thorough testing for my Be Web Smart readers!) and received a chat within a few minutes. From what I’ve seen many of the whispers are confessions or questions or even cries for help…i.e. Since there are only generic usernames, you won’t necessarily be identified. You can start a chat with anyone who posts a whisper. In the same sentence describing their app: “build lasting, meaningful relationships in a community built around trust and honesty.” Clearly the app is only as anonymous as you make it. (You do have the option, when sharing your Whisper, to remove the location or make it more generic, such as your state rather than your city.) While you won’t see an exact location, the combination of Location and Chat (see below) would make it easy enough for someone to try to make contact in hopes of a meet up.Ĭhat Feature– I was surprised to find a Chat feature in an app that welcomes you to “ anonymously share your thoughts with the world”. I’m not sure why the screenshot says “we’ll keep it a secret” as I saw plenty of Whispers from my town and surrounding towns. You can even set a radius, for example to view recent Whispers from within 10 miles, 5 miles, even within 1 mile away. Location Settings – the app prompts you to enable your location, and then you are able to view other Whispers in your area on the “Nearby” tab. Of course most Whispers are not quite that innocent, here are a few examples of the statements and images found on Whisper (think about your child, tween or teen perusing the app with this in mind!) For example if you declare “I love chocolate” then you might see a picture like this: When you want to share something, you type your message (called a “whisper”) and then the app chooses a photo that matches the content of your message. (You are actually provided a username but it’s pretty random). On Whisper there are no user accounts or profiles. If you haven’t heard of Whisper, it is an anonymous sharing app where you can divulge your deepest, darkest secret to an audience of unknown people, and voyeuristically read and respond to their confessions. I could end this article right here! But that wouldn’t be too helpful. I hope that you never find Whisper on your teen’s phone.
